This year the Future Food Institute is back at the Maker Faire Rome with a whole new area: the Future Food Zone! The objective was understanding how food innovation is not only tasty, but also impactful!   • Future of Proteins

 

New meats are not just a novel food. Finding new protein sources is crucial if we want to limit the strong impact on the climate that the production of meat generates. A great example is Beyond Meat, the burger that looks, smells and tastes like meat. “We use natural ingredients, like peas, coconut oil or beets, ingredients that have been used in many kitchens for centuries”, explains Joseph Puglisi, creator of the meat-no-meat. Want to know more?   • Food Makers

 

Playing with raw materials for fighting waste? This was the objective of the Food Makers panel! The best idea? Ooho, an edible plastic sphere, who fights against traditional packaging. It can contain almost every liquid and is completely biodegradable! “Throwing away a package without eating it, is like letting a leaf fall on the ground”, said Rodrigo García González, about his impressive product.   • Ocean Life

 

Fish-data monitoring and circular economy projects: saving the oceans from plastic contamination and preserving the ecosystem, has become a mission to achieve with diverse solutions. A great example is Atlantic Leather, an initiative that works with fish skin from the food industry. They then sell this fabric to the fashion industry to design bags. “Our product is sustainable because it comes from the leftovers and it can dissolve easily in nature”, reveals Gunnsteinn Björnsson, general manager of this startup. If you want to know more about it, watch the video!

  • Food Revolution Starts at School

 

Food at school: food revolutions are here! Did you know that the waste from an onion can serve as natural pigment for textiles? The natural products from Hong Kong turn textile pigments into a game for kids thanks to Dyelicious! “This project was born from one fact: 3,600 tons of food are wasted in Hong Kong daily”, explains Eric C. Lam, food upcycling designer. Watch again the panel here!

 

  • Agro-innovation in Smart Cities

 

In this panel we did not only talk about  organic and a zero carbon footprint agriculture, but also on how technology can bring closer consumers to the roots. One of the best practices, was brought by Flick On Food, a virtual reality system that reconstructs the process from producer to consumer. “With this project we want to help the food industry to connect with the customer world”, said Michela Di Nuzzo, creator of this project.   • Agriculture, environment and innovation: a trip in Italy

 

A social business hub, a documentary and an app: so many projects launched at MFR18 for preserving Italian food identity! The greatest novelty?   • Future Food For Climate Change

 

Food waste, according to CO2 emissions, is the biggest country in the world after the United States and China. How can it become smaller? With projects like Future Food For Climate Change, an initiative that fights back climate change by supporting revolutionary projects from young talents, through the amazing hackathon presented during MFR18! Watch the talk here!

  • Food Care

 

The ultimate goal of innovating in this sector is making a safe future of food. The panel on the topic of food care aimed at understanding how we might make a future that traces how to create a better food system taking into account all the stakeholders that are involved in the system; from farmers to consumers. One of the projects that is most effectively helping consumers is Nima, a smart device that can easily alert consumers of the presence of gluten and other allergens in any given dish. “Our objective? Informing people about what they eat, without restricting them from the pleasure of eating and socializing”, explains Monica Cipriani, project associate. Follow the link and find out more!
